SJVN Limited (formerly Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited) was incorporated on May 24, 1988, as a joint venture between the Government of India and the Himachal Pradesh government to execute the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station, which commissioned in 2003. Originally named Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation, it was renamed in 2002 to reflect its expansion into other hydro projects, and later became a listed Mini Ratna company. Today, it is a leading diversified power company with operations in hydro, wind, solar, and transmission across India and neighboring countries. 

 

Key Historical Milestones

  • 1988: Incorporated as Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation Private Limited on May 24th.
  • 1992: Took over execution of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Electric Project (NJHEP) from HPSEB.
  • 2002: Company name changed from Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation Limited to Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited.
  • 2003: Commercial operation of the Nathpa Jhakri HEP began, establishing it as a key hydro player.
  • 2004: Began work on the 412 MW Rampur Hydro Power Station and began expanding its portfolio.
  • 2008: Awarded "Mini Ratna" Category-I status and initiated the Arun-III project in Nepal.
  • 2009: Name changed to SJVN Limited to reflect a broader scope beyond the Sutlej River.
  • 2016: Commissioned the 86 km Indo-Nepal Cross Border Power Transmission Line.
  • Present: Transformed into a diversified power entity involved in conventional and non-conventional energy (Solar, Wind, Thermal) with projects in multiple Indian states, Nepal, and Bhutan. 

Key Projects & Growth

  • Nathpa Jhakri & Rampur: The company was built on the success of these two large HP projects.
  • Diversification: Expanded into wind projects (Khirvire, Maharashtra; Sadla, Gujarat) and solar projects (Charanka, Gujarat).
  • International Footprint: Actively involved in project development in Nepal and Bhutan. 

SJVN has grown from a single-project operation into a major power utility with an expanding portfolio focusing on sustainable energy generation and transmission.
