The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI), established on October 2, 1961, by merging Eastern and Western Shipping Corporations, is India's largest shipping line. Initially owning 19 vessels, it expanded to a diverse fleet of over 120 vessels, including tankers, liners, and LNG carriers. Key milestones include merging with Jayanti Shipping (1973) and Mogul Lines (1986), gaining "Miniratna" (2000) and "Navratna" status (2008).

  • 1961: Formed as a public sector company under the Government of India.
  • 1973/1986: Amalgamation of Jayanti Shipping Company (1973) and Mogul Lines Limited (1986).
  • 1984: Diversified into offshore operations, supporting India's oil sector.
  • 1987: Established the Maritime Training Institute in Mumbai

  • Initial Fleet: Started with 19 vessels and 0.19 million DWT.
  • Diversification: Expanded from a predominantly liner company to operating crude oil tankers, LPG/ammonia carriers, chemical tankers, and offshore supply vessels.
  • Current Status: As of 2025/2026, SCI continues to be a crucial player in India's energy and bulk transport, with a strong focus on tanker operations and LNG management.

The SCI played a key role in making India self-reliant in transporting clean petroleum products by 2000. It has been a consistent recipient of awards for safety and environmental consciousness in the maritime sector.
