Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL)

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (Vizag Steel), was incorporated on February 18, 1982, as a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Steel. Founded in 1971, the plant was initially part of SAIL before being separated in April 1982. It is India's first coast-based integrated steel plant, known for specializing in long products. 

 

Key Historical Milestones of RINL:

  • 1970: Prime Minister Indira Gandhi announced the decision to build the steel plant.
  • 1971: The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant was founded.
  • 1982: Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) was incorporated on February 18 to manage the plant, becoming a separate entity from SAIL.
  • 1992: Commissioning of the first 3-million-ton-per-annum (mtpa) integrated steel plant.
  • 2010: Awarded the prestigious Navratna status by the Government of India.
  • 2015: Completed a brownfield expansion to increase liquid steel capacity to 6.3-mtpa.
  • 2017: Capacity reached 7.3-million tons per annum.
  • 2021: The Cabinet approved the privatisation of RINL, though this decision faced significant protests.
  • 2025: Plans announced for a ₹11,440 crore revival package to support production. 

RINL has been recognized for its environmental initiatives, including commissioning solar panels in 2016. It remains a critical manufacturer of long products in India, serving various industrial sectors.
