Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is a 100% government-owned Schedule A CPSE incorporated on January 24, 2003, to accelerate India's rail infrastructure projects. Established under the Ministry of Railways to implement the National Rail Vikas Yojana (NRVY), it focuses on capacity augmentation, doubling, gauge conversion, and electrification. It achieved Navratna status in 2023. 

Key Historical Milestones:

• Formation (2002-2003): Proposed by PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on August 15, 2002, to fill the resource gap in rail projects, RVNL was incorporated on January 24, 2003, and started operations on February 18, 2003.
• Mandate: Its primary goal is to act as an "umbrella special purpose vehicle" (SPV) for project development, resource mobilization, and executing projects, such as strengthening the Golden Quadrilateral and enhancing port connectivity.
• Listing (2019): RVNL launched its IPO on March 29, 2019, and was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) on April 19, 2019.
• Growth & Status:
  • MiniRatna Category-I: Achieved status in 2003.
  • Navratna Status: Conferred on May 1, 2023.
  • Performance: Consistently ranked high among Railway PSUs for project execution, including major projects like the Kolkata Metro, Rishikesh-Karnaprayag link, and new Pamban bridge. 

Operational Role:RVNL functions on a turnkey basis, handling the entire life cycle of projects from design to commissioning. It works for the Indian Railways but also undertakes projects for other central/state ministries and departments.
