Incorporated in September 2000, RailTel Corporation of India Limited is a "Navratna" Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways, designed to modernize telecommunication infrastructure along railway tracks. It operates one of India's largest neutral fiber-optic networks, covering over 63,000 km, to provide telecom services for train operations and commercial purposes. ]

 

Key Historical Milestones:

  • Establishment (2000): Incorporated on September 26, 2000, to monetize surplus fiber infrastructure and improve Railway signaling.
  • Expansion (Early 2000s): Initiated an aggressive rollout of Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) across India.
  • Retail Broadband (2015): Launched "RailWire", its retail broadband initiative, and commissioned the first railway station Wi-Fi at Mumbai Central.
  • Subsidiary Formation (2014): Set up RailTel Enterprises Limited (REL) to act as a system integrator for ICT projects.
  • Modernization: Transformed into a key provider of digital services, including Data Centers, HD video conferencing, and Station Wi-Fi.
  • Upgrade (2024): Granted "Navratna" status in August 2024. 

RailTel serves as a key digital infrastructure provider, operating a pan-India network that covers over 70% of India's population and supports crucial government initiatives like BharatNet.
