NHPC Limited (formerly National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) is a premier Indian government enterprise incorporated on November 7, 1975, designed to plan and develop hydropower across India. Headquartered in Faridabad, it has grown into a "Navratna" company and a leader in renewable energy, diversifying from pure hydro projects into solar, wind, and tidal power, with a total installed capacity exceeding 8,000 MW. 

Key Historical Milestones

• Incorporation (1975): Formed with a mandate to foster organized, efficient development of hydroelectric power.
• Early Projects (1976-1980s): Took over critical projects like Salal Stage-I, Baira Siul, and Loktak from the Central Hydroelectric Projects Control Board. The 180 MW Baira Siul project was commissioned in 1982-83.
• Diversification and Growth (1990s-2000s): Commissioned major projects including Chamera-I (540 MW) and increased its footprint in the Himalayan region.
