Incorporated on April 25, 1970, as Housing and Urban Development Corporation Private Limited (later HUDCO Ltd), the company was established by the Government of India to address the critical housing shortage, focusing on low-cost housing and urban infrastructure. Operating under the motto "Profitability with Social Justice," it has evolved into a premier techno-financial institution with Navratna status, funding over 19 million houses and major infrastructure projects. 

 

Key Historical Milestones

  • Establishment (1970): Formed under the Companies Act, 1956, with a ₹2 crore equity base, initially operating from rented rooms in New Delhi.
  • Initial Focus: The main objective was to provide cheap financial resources for housing the urban/rural poor and supporting government housing boards.
  • Expansion (1989): Expanded beyond housing into infrastructure financing, including water supply, sanitation, and urban roads.
  • Key Divisions & Recognitions:
    • 1991: Won the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for contribution to housing development.
    • 1998: Launched

      HUDCO NIWAS for retail individual housing loans.

    • 2004: Conferred Miniratna status.
    • 2023–2024: Awarded Navratna status.
  • Public Listing (2017): Launched its Initial Public Offering (IPO), reducing government stake.
  • Current Status: As of 2026, it is a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and is classified as a Non-Banking Financial Company – Infrastructure Finance Company (NBFC-IFC) by the RBI.

  • Impact: HUDCO has played a major role in implementing government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and Smart Cities Mission
