Engineers India Limited (EIL)

Engineers India Ltd (EIL), established in 1965 as a joint venture with Bechtel International, USA, is a premier Indian engineering consultancy company. It became a wholly-owned government of India enterprise in 1967, designed to drive self-reliance in the hydrocarbon sector. EIL provides "concept to commissioning" services across oil & gas, petrochemicals, fertilizers, and infrastructure sectors.

 

Key Historical Milestones

  • 1965: Incorporated on March 15; began operations with the Madras Refinery project.
  • 1967: Became a wholly-owned Government of India company.
  • 1969: Expanded into petrochemicals with projects for IPCL (now Reliance Industries Ltd) at Vadodara.
  • 1974: Entered the space and defense sectors, providing services to ISRO and DRDO.
  • 1979: Awarded the design and engineering of the Bombay High North (BHN) offshore platform.
  • 1986: Commissioned a Propylene Recovery Plant designed internally and executed the major 1800 km Hazira-Bijapur-Jagdishpur (HBJ) gas pipeline for GAIL.
  • 1997: Granted Mini Ratna status and became listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE).
  • 2000s–Present: Diversified into water management, solar energy, nuclear power, and green technologies (green hydrogen, 2G ethanol).

  • Ownership: EIL is a Navratna company, with a majority stake held by the Government of India.
  • Global Footprint: EIL established a strong international presence, with its Abu Dhabi office starting in 1996 to serve the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region. It has also worked on international projects like the Dangote oil refinery in Nigeria.
  • Strategic Impact: EIL has engineered 11 of the 12 mega petrochemical complexes in India and worked on 20 of its 23 refineries.
  • Sustainability Focus: EIL has committed to achieving Net Zero by 2035.
