Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR)

Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR), a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, was incorporated in March 1988 and began operations in November 1989. It was established to spearhead containerization in India's logistics sector, taking over 7 Inland Container Depots (ICDs) from Indian Railways to provide cost-effective multimodal logistics.

Key milestones in the history of CONCOR include:

  • Establishment & Early Expansion (1988-1990s): Incorporated in March 1988, CONCOR began operations in November 1989, inheriting a network of 7 ICDs. It quickly commissioned new terminals in the early 1990s, including ICDs at Ahmedabad, Pune, Hyderabad, and major Container Freight Stations (CFS) at Moradabad and Panipat.
  • Expansion of Services (1990s-2000s): The company expanded from purely international freight to domestic traffic, focusing on door-to-door services. In 1991, it commissioned a Port Side Container Terminal (PSCT) at Tondiarpet.
  • Infrastructure Growth & Technology: Throughout the 2000s, CONCOR invested heavily in infrastructure, developing a, network of over 60 terminals, including high-speed rakes, 52 reach stackers, and 17 gantry cranes to bolster container handling capacity. It has also integrated advanced IT systems (like MAXIMO) to enhance terminal efficiency.
  • Modernization & Strategic Focus (2010s-Present): CONCOR has transitioned into a "Logistics Solution Provider," shifting focus to building Multi Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs), particularly along Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs). As of 2025, the company operates a robust network of 66+ terminals.
  • Ownership Structure: While initially 100% government-owned, the President of India continues to hold 54.80% stake as of March 2025, following a "Navratna" status designation, which allows it greater operational and financial autonomy.

Today, CONCOR acts as the primary operator of inland container logistics in India, connecting Indian ports with the hinterland via rail and road.
