Founded in Bangalore in 1954 under the Ministry of Defence, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is a premier Navratna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) dedicated to indigenous defence electronics. Starting with communication equipment in 1956, BEL expanded into radars, semiconductors, and specialized components, becoming a key partner for India's armed forces. 

Key Historical Milestones

• 1954: Incorporated in Bangalore, Karnataka, to meet specialized defence needs.
• 1956–1960s: Commenced manufacturing of radio communication equipment, receiving valves (1961), and Germanium semiconductors (1962).
• 1964–1966: Began supplying radio transmitters to All India Radio and established a radar manufacturing facility for the Army, along with in-house R&D.
• 1970s: Diversified into TV picture tubes, X-ray tubes, microwave tubes, and naval frigates radars.
• 1990s: Listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in 1993-94, followed by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in 2000.
• Diversification: Expanded into Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), solar power, homeland security, and satellite communications. 

Evolution and Modern EraBEL grew from producing basic military radios to supplying advanced warfare systems, including missile systems, electro-optics, and network-centric systems. The company has expanded to nine manufacturing units and established, which is a major, NAVRA]TNA PSU,. Today, it is at the forefront of the "Make in India" initiative in defence.
