Vistadome Trains

Vistadome coaches in India were introduced by Indian Railways in April 2017 on the Visakhapatnam-Araku route to enhance tourism with panoramic, European-style glass-roofed coaches featuring rotating seats and large windows. Designed for scenic routes, they have expanded from a few specialized routes to over 30 coaches across India, manufactured by ICF Chennai on LHB platforms.

Key Historical & Design Milestones

  • Inauguration (2017): The first Vistadome coach was launched on April 16, 2017, by Indian Railways on the Vishakhapatnam – Araku Valley route, manufactured by

Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.

  • Expansion (2018-2020): Services expanded to scenic routes like the Mumbai-Madgaon Jan Shatabdi Express in 2018, later upgrading to modernized LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches with improved safety and comfort.
  • Modernization (2020-Present): Newer coaches boast electric-controlled glass roofs (opalescence), wider wheelchairs-accessible doors, automatic sliding doors, CCTV, and ergonomic reclining seats that rotate 180°-360°.
  • Expansion Routes: Popular routes now include Mumbai-Madgaon, Bengaluru-Mangalore, Assam-Tripura routes, and the Kalka-Shimla hill route.
  • Impact: These coaches have boosted tourism in regions like the North East (Dima-Hasao) and the Western Ghats, with over 1.76 lakh passengers utilizing the services on central routes by 2023-24.
