Mahaparinirvan Express

Launched by IRCTC on March 28, 2007, the Mahaparinirvan Express is a specialized Buddhist circuit tourist train designed to take pilgrims to key sites associated with Lord Buddha's life in Northern India and Nepal. This 8-day/7-night journey covers Lumbini, Bodhgaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar, and more.

Key Historical & Operational Aspects:

  • Purpose: The train is named after Buddha’s final passing (Mahaparinirvana) and was created to offer a comfortable pilgrimage experience, particularly for international tourists.
  • Launch & Evolution: Initially launched in 2007, it was revamped in 2009 with enhanced amenities to better cater to Buddhist pilgrims.
  • Route and Stops: The itinerary covers significant sites in India and Nepal: Bodhgaya (enlightenment), Rajgir/Nalanda, Sarnath/Varanasi (first sermon), Lumbini (birthplace), Kushinagar (passing), and Agra (Taj Mahal).
  • Amenities: It operates as an air-conditioned luxury train with sleepers, a modern kitchen, onboard security, dining cars, and personalized service, often utilizing modified carriages.
  • Operations: The train typically runs during the tourist season, often attracting visitors from Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Japan.

The train connects pilgrims directly to the roots of Buddhism, allowing them to follow the last footsteps of the Buddha in comfort.
