The Golden Chariot is South India's premier luxury train, connecting travelers to the region's heritage. Inspired by the Hampi stone chariot, it features 19 coaches, 44 cabins named after ruling dynasties, and two restaurants, operated by IRCTC for tours.
Key Historical & Design Elements:
- Launch & Operation: The train was inaugurated in 2008 to showcase South Indian history, offering journeys from Bengaluru to Goa. In January 2020, operation was handed from the Karnataka Tourism Department to the IRCTC.
- Design & Name: Named after the iconic stone chariot at Hampi, the train features purple and gold colors, representing cultural elegance and Karnataka's heritage.
- Interior and Facilities: The carriages are themed after South Indian dynasties (e.g., Hoysala, Chalukya). It includes 44 cabins with modern amenities, two restaurants (Nalapaka and Ruchi), a lounge bar (Madira), and a gym.
- Itineraries: The train features itineraries like "Pride of Karnataka" and "Glimpses of Karnataka," covering UNESCO sites and cultural hubs across Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
- Awards: The Golden Chariot has been awarded the title of “Asia's Leading Luxury Train” by the World Travel Awards.
