Cipla - Chemical, Industrial & Pharmaceutical Laboratories

Founded in 1935 by Dr. K.A. Hamied, Cipla (Chemical, Industrial & Pharmaceutical Laboratories) was established to make India self-reliant in medicine, earning support from leaders like Mahatma Gandhi. It became a global pioneer in providing affordable, generic medications, notably offering HIV/AIDS triple therapy at less than a dollar a day in 2001, revolutionizing care for low-income nations.

Key Milestones and Legacy:

  • 1935: Established in Bombay with the aim to create "Swadeshi" (indigenous) medicine.
  • 1960s-70s: Pioneered indigenous production of vital drugs (like Ampicillin) and entered the respiratory care market.
  • The Patent Fight (1970s): Under Dr. Y.K. Hamied (son of the founder), Cipla pressured the government to change patent laws from product patents to process patents, allowing the production of affordable generics.
  • 2001 HIV Milestone: Cipla offered HIV/AIDS medication to patients in Africa for roughly $\$1$ per day, breaking the monopoly of high-priced Western drug manufacturers.
  • Global Presence: Currently a major global player (headquartered in Mumbai) with over 1,500 products, leading in respiratory care and anti-infectives across 74+ markets.

Cipla continues to focus on "Caring for Life" and is widely recognized for its contribution to making healthcare accessible and affordable, particularly in developing economies.
