JSW Steel
Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Limited (JVSL), established in 1994 by the O.P. Jindal Group in Toranagallu, Karnataka, is the cornerstone of present-day JSW Steel. Strategically located in the iron ore belt, it commissioned its plant in 1997, merging with Jindal Iron and Steel Company (JISCO) in 2005 to form JSW Steel Limited, now India's second-largest steel producer.
Key Historical Milestones
- Foundation (1994): JVSL was established in Toranagallu, Bellary-Hospet region of Karnataka, chosen for its proximity to iron ore mines.
- Commissioning (1997): The plant began operations as the first integrated steel plant to use Corex technology for hot metal production.
- Expansion (Late 1990s-2004): The facility expanded in 1999 and 2004, developing into a massive, 10,000-acre complex.
- Merger (2005): JVSL merged with JISCO (established in 1982) to form JSW Steel Limited, creating a more integrated, large-scale company.
- Later Developments: The plant continued expansions in 2006 and 2009. In 2011, it faced operational challenges due to a regional iron ore mining crisis, but later resumed full capacity, becoming one of the largest single-location steel plants in the world.
Corporate Evolution
- Name Change: JVSL was renamed JSW Steel Limited on June 16, 2005.
- Management: The company is led by Sajjan Jindal, part of the Jindal family, which expanded its steel business significantly from its initial 1982 acquisition in Maharashtra.
- Legacy: Shareholders of JVSL saw significant growth; shares of JVSL were converted into JSW Steel shares following the merger, becoming a key stock for long-term investors.
The site in Toranagallu remains a cornerstone of the company's production, operating as the Vijayanagar Works.
