HCLTech was founded in 1976 by Shiv Nadar and a team of engineers as a hardware company ("Hindustan Computers Limited") in India, emerging as a pioneer in indigenous, early-stage computing. It pivoted from hardware to global IT services in the 1990s and 2000s, becoming a leader in infrastructure management and software. Today, HCLTech is a Fortune 500 global technology firm specializing in digital, engineering, and cloud solutions.
Key Historical Milestones
- 1976 - Formation: Founded by eight former DCM employees, led by Shiv Nadar, initially focusing on teledigital calculators.
- 1978 - Hardware Pioneer: Released one of India's first indigenous microcomputers, before many global peers.
- 1980s - Indigenous Innovation: Developed RDBMS, networking OS, and a symmetric multiprocessor (Magnum).
- 1991 - Expansion: HCL Overseas Limited was incorporated to focus on international markets, later evolving into HCL Technologies.
- 1999 - Focus on IT Services: Renamed to HCL Technologies Limited to reflect its focus on software services, and became publicly listed.
- 2000s - IT Boom & Expansion: Pioneered Remote Infrastructure Management (RIM).

- 2020/21 - Leadership Transition: Shiv Nadar handed over the reins to his daughter, Roshni Nadar, as Chairperson, with C Vijayakumar as CEO.
