Founded in 1983 by Dilip Shanghvi in Vapi, Gujarat, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. began as a small-scale manufacturer with five psychiatry products and a two-person team. It grew rapidly to become India's largest and the world's fourth-largest specialty generic pharma company, driven by key acquisitions like Caraco Pharma (1997), Taro Pharma (2010), and Ranbaxy (2014). 

 

Key Historical Milestones:

  • 1983: Established by Dilip Shanghvi to manufacture psychiatry formulations.
  • 1989: Initiated export operations.
  • 1994: Went public and was oversubscribed 55 times.
  • 1996–1997: Expanded manufacturing capabilities by acquiring plants from Knoll Pharmaceuticals and Tamil Nadu Dadha Pharmaceuticals.
  • 1997: Entered the international market by acquiring Detroit-based Caraco Pharmaceuticals.
  • 2010: Acquired a controlling stake in Taro Pharmaceuticals, strengthening its presence in the US and Israel dermatology markets.
  • 2014: Acquired Ranbaxy Laboratories for $\$4$ billion, making it the top Indian pharma company and the world's fifth-largest specialty generic company at the time.
  • Present: Operates in over 100 countries with over 40 manufacturing sites across six continents. 

The company focuses heavily on research and development (R&D), operating several centers globally and focusing on complex generic products, including oncology, dermatology, and cardiovascular treatments.
