Asian Paints

Founded in 1942 in a Mumbai garage by four friends—Chimanlal Choksi, Champaklal Choksey, Suryakant Dani, and Arvind Vakil—Asian Paints grew from a wartime partnership into India's market leader by 1967. Known for innovations like the "Gattu" mascot (1954), early technology adoption, and extensive distribution, it is now Asia’s third-largest paint company with a global presence.

Key Milestones in Asian Paints History

  • 1942: Humble Beginnings: Founded during World War II when paint imports were banned, creating a market opportunity.
  • 1954: The Iconic "Gattu": The company introduced Gattu, a famous cartoon mascot created by

R.K. Laxman, to symbolize the brand.

  • 1967: Market Leadership: Only 25 years after its inception, the firm became the leading paint company in India.
  • 1970s: Technological Pioneer: The company was the first in India's private sector to purchase a mainframe computer (Carl Zeiss).
  • 1982: Going Public: The company went public to meet listing requirements and finance its expanding operations.
  • 1990s: Branding and Growth: Established high-profile advertising, including "Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai," and expanded product lines to include premium emulsions.
  • 2000s–Present: Global Expansion: The firm grew into a multinational, operating in 15+ countries with over 25 manufacturing facilities worldwide.

Key Drivers of Success

  • Distribution Network: The company is known for its efficient supply chain that services over 150,000 dealers, often multiple times daily.
  • Rural Focus: Early in its history, the company focused on the rural market, a segment largely ignored by foreign competitors, allowing it to build a loyal customer base.
  • Technological Advancement: Consistently using data to improve manufacturing and supply chain efficiency.

Today, Asian Paints is considered a dominant player in India's decorative coatings sector, consistently holding over 50% market share.
