Incorporated on January 24, 1973, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking that manages India's major integrated steel plants. Evolving from Hindustan Steel Limited (founded 1954), SAIL was formed to centralize management of plants in Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bokaro, and Burnpur. It is a vital industrial pillar supporting India's infrastructure, producing steel for major projects. 

Key Historical Developments of SAIL

• Origins (1950s-1960s): The foundation began with Hindustan Steel Limited (HSL), set up in 1954 to manage Rourkela Steel Plant. Bhilai (with Soviet help) and Durgapur (with UK support) were added, taking control of these plants by 1957.
• Incorporation (1973): Following a 1972 policy to centralize input/output management, SAIL was formally incorporated on January 24, 1973, with an authorized capital of ₹2,000 crore.
• Restructuring (1978): In 1978, SAIL was restructured from a holding company into an operating company.
• Expansion and Modernization (1980s-2000s): Throughout the 80s and 90s, SAIL modernized by adopting basic oxygen furnaces and continuous casting.
• Growth and Acquisition: In 2009, SAIL acquired the defunct Malvika Steel for ₹209 crore.
• Recent Era: Today, SAIL is a key producer of steel for national infrastructure, including projects like the Bandra Worli Sea Link and the Chenab rail bridge.
