Gail India Limited

GAIL (India) Limited, incorporated in August 1984 as Gas Authority of India Ltd, is India's premier state-owned natural gas company. Initially focused on constructing the HVJ pipeline, it evolved from a transmission firm into an integrated energy giant, pioneering CNG distribution (1997), petrochemicals, and renewable energy, earning Maharatna status in 2013. 

 

Key Milestones and Evolution:

  • 1984–1990s (Foundation): Incorporated as a PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, focusing on the 1,750 km+ Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline, which was commissioned by 1991.
  • 1990s (Diversification): Commenced LPG production (1990) and entered City Gas Distribution (CGD) in Delhi (1997).
  • 1997 (Navratna Status): Awarded Navratna status for its "excellent track record".
  • 2000s (Growth & Rebranding): Renamed to GAIL (India) Limited in 2002. Developed India's largest petrochemical plant in Pata, Uttar Pradesh, and launched the

    GAILTEL


    broadband network.
  • 2013 (Maharatna Status): Achieved the prestigious Maharatna status.
  • Present (Sustainability): Currently transitioning towards renewable energy, including solar, wind, and green hydrogen, while expanding its pipeline network and LNG portfolio. 

Key Business Areas:

  • Natural Gas Transmission: Owns over 16,420 km of pipelines.
  • City Gas Distribution: Major player in CNG and PNG supply through subsidiaries like IGL.
  • Petrochemicals: Operates a petrochemical plant with 810 KTPA capacity.
  • LNG and LPG: Handles substantial LNG portfolio and LPG pipeline network.
