Larsen & Toubro
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is a major Indian multinational conglomerate founded in 1938 in Bombay by Danish engineers Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro. Starting as an importer of European machinery, it grew into a premier manufacturing and construction giant, specializing in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects, heavy engineering, and technology.
Founding and Early Years (1938-1950)
- Origins: Founded to represent Danish dairy equipment manufacturers in India.
- War Opportunity: During World War II, when Nordic supplies were cut off, the founders began repairing ships and manufacturing machinery, marking their entry into industrial engineering.
- Incorporation: Incorporated as a private limited company in 1946.
- First Workshop: Established their first manufacturing workshop in Mumbai (now Powai) in 1948.
Growth and Development (1950-2000)
- Public Company: Became a public company in 1950 with a paid-up capital of ₹20 lakh.
- Expanding Scope: Expanded into construction by forming Engineering Construction Corporation (ECC) in 1944.
- Milestones: Expanded into heavy engineering, manufacturing switchboards, and cement production by the 1970s.
- Leadership: Holck-Larsen retired in 1978, but the company sustained growth, becoming a top-25 Indian company by 1973.
Modern Era (2000-Present)
- Expansion & Infrastructure: Grew to become India’s largest construction company, involved in major infrastructure projects.
- Technology & Diversification: Strengthened its presence in IT services (L&T Infotech/LTIMindtree) and financial services.
- Leadership Transition: A.M. Naik led the company to become a massive conglomerate before S.N. Subrahmanyan took over as CEO and managing director in 2017.
- Global Presence: Expanded globally with manufacturing facilities in China and the Gulf region, cementing its status as an international engineering firm.
Today, L&T is a premier, employee-driven company (via the L&T Employees Welfare Foundation) and a cornerstone of Indian industry.
