Air France

Formed on August 30, 1933, through the merger of five major French airlines (Air Orient, Air Union, CIDNA, SGTA, and Aéropostale), Air France grew to become France's national carrier, pioneering international routes and embracing the jet age with the Concorde. It was nationalized in 1945, later acquiring rivals UTA and Air Inter in 1990 before merging with KLM in 2003 to form Air France–KLM.

Key Milestones and History:

  • 1933: Founding: Known as the "great merger," the airline was officially inaugurated on October 7, 1933, with its headquarters in Paris.
  • 1945–1946: Post-War Rebuilding: After operations were halted during WWII, it was nationalized and resumed flights, launching its iconic Paris to New York route in July 1946.
  • 1950s–1970s: Jet Age & Concorde: The airline adopted jet technology, with Caravelle jets and Boeing 707s transforming travel in the 1950s and 60s. It was a joint launch operator of the supersonic Concorde.
  • 1990: Expansion: Acquired Air Inter (domestic) and UTA (international) to expand its footprint.
  • 2003: Merger with KLM: Formed Europe's leading airline group, Air France-KLM.

Key Incidents and Structure:

  • Safety Incidents: The airline was involved in the tragic Air France Flight 447 crash in 2009 (Rio de Janeiro to Paris), which accelerated improvements in pilot training and sensor technology.
  • Modern Day: Air France now serves over 200 destinations, operating from its main hub at

Paris-Charles de Gaulle which is a major global connector.

  • Legacy: Throughout its history, Air France has been associated with luxury, elegance, and the French "art of travel".
