KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

Founded on October 7, 1919, by Albert Plesman, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is the world's oldest airline still operating under its original name. Renowned for early intercontinental flights to the Dutch East Indies (1920s) and pioneering postwar Atlantic routes (1946), KLM merged with Air France in 2004, forming Air France-KLM.

Key Milestones in KLM's History:

  • 1919-1920: Foundation & First Flight: Founded with the "Royal" predicate from Queen Wilhelmina, the first flight took place on May 17, 1920, flying from London to Amsterdam.
  • Intercontinental Expansion: In 1924, KLM operated its first test flight to Batavia (Jakarta), later creating a subsidiary, KNILM, to manage the longest air route in the world at the time.
  • Wartime Resilience: During World War II, KLM was largely grounded, but maintained operations in the West Indies (Caribbean) and used a few aircraft based in the UK for routes to Lisbon.
  • The Jet Age (1960s): KLM introduced Douglas DC-8 jet aircraft in 1960, drastically reducing travel time to New York and across its network.
  • Global Alliances: In 1989, KLM purchased a 20% stake in Northwest Airlines, forming a pioneering transatlantic joint venture that preceded the SkyTeam Alliance

    .
  • Air France Merger (2004): KLM merged with Air France, resulting in one of Europe’s largest airline groups, though both operate under their own names and brands.
