Founded in 1952 as Japan Helicopter Transport, All Nippon Airways (ANA) grew from a small cargo operator into Japan's largest 5-star airline. Merging with Far East Airlines in 1958, it expanded domestically before launching international routes in 1986. Today, it is a leading Star Alliance member known for premium service. 

 

Key Milestones in the Story of ANA:

  • 1952–1953 (Beginnings): Founded on Dec 27, 1952, as Japan Helicopter and Aeroplane Transports Company, it started passenger service on Feb 1, 1954, between Osaka and Tokyo.
  • 1957–1958 (Formation): The airline changed its name to All Nippon Airways in 1957 and merged with Far East Airlines in 1958 to become Japan's largest private carrier.
  • 1960s (Jet Age): Entered the jet age in 1964 with the Boeing 727, fueling rapid growth alongside Japan's economic expansion.
  • 1986 (International Expansion): Launched its first scheduled international flights to Guam in 1986, breaking the monopoly of Japan Airlines on many international routes.
  • 1999 (Global Alliances): Joined the Star Alliance, significantly expanding its global network connectivity.
  • 2004–2013 (Modern Era): Launched Boeing 787 Dreamliner operations (2004) and established ANA Holdings Company in 2013 to improve competitiveness.
  • Present Day: ANA has achieved 5-star ratings for 13 consecutive years (as of 2026), operating extensive international routes to Europe, North America, and Asia.
