Emirates

Emirates was founded in March 1985 in Dubai with backing from the royal family, specifically Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, launching its first flight to Karachi, Pakistan, on October 25, 1985. Launched with $10 million in seed money and leased aircraft from Pakistan International Airlines, the airline achieved rapid growth and profitability within its first nine months.

Key Milestones in Emirates History:

  • 1985: Emirates officially launches, with inaugural flights utilizing a leased Boeing 737-300 and Airbus A300B4-200.
  • 1987: The airline takes delivery of its first wholly-owned aircraft, an Airbus A310-300, marking a transition from relying solely on wet-leased planes.
  • 1990s: Expanded route network across Europe and Asia; in 1992, placed a significant order for seven Boeing 777s.
  • 2000s: In 2000, Emirates became the first airline to order the Airbus A3XX (later the A380). It subsequently became the largest operator of both the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777.
  • Growth: Benefited significantly from the Gulf War in the early 1990s as the only airline to maintain service, and grew rapidly, averaging 30% annual growth in its early years.

Today, the airline is a cornerstone of Dubai's economy, operating a massive fleet of over 250 aircraft to over 150 destinations.
