Singapore Airlines

Founded in 1947 as Malayan Airways, Singapore Airlines (SIA) evolved from a regional carrier into a premier global airline. It was formally incorporated as an independent entity in 1972 following the split of Malaysia-Singapore Airlines. Renowned for its service excellence, the airline has consistently ranked among the world's best, specializing in long-haul flights from its Changi Airport hub. 

 

Key Historical Milestones

  • 1947–1966: Malayan Airways Limited: Began on May 1, 1947, with a chartered flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur using an Airspeed Consul plane.
  • 1966–1972: Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA): Following Malaysia's independence, the airline was rebranded as MSA, jointly owned by both governments.
  • 1972: Formation of Singapore Airlines: Due to different operational focus, MSA split into Malaysian Airline System and Singapore Airlines (SIA) on October 1, 1972. The iconic "Bird of Gold" logo was adopted to symbolize grace and speed.
  • 1970s–1980s: Rapid Expansion: SIA was one of the first airlines to purchase the Boeing 747, branding its fleet as "Big Tops" and rapidly expanding to destinations like London, Tokyo, and San Francisco.
  • 1990s–Present: Industry Leadership: The airline became a major investor in passenger comforts, such as launching in-flight entertainment in all classes. In 2007, it became the first to fly the Airbus A380.

  • Ownership: The company is majority-owned by Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings.
  • Global Standing: Ranked #1 in the world numerous times, such as in the 2024 Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards.
  • Subsidiaries: Includes low-cost carrier Scoot and formerly managed SilkAir.
  • Star Alliance: A founding member of the Star Alliance global network.
  • COVID-19 Recovery: Despite severe losses in 2020-2021, the airline utilized government funding to survive and rapidly restored its route network. 

Today, Singapore Airlines operates a modern fleet of Airbus A350s and Boeing 777s, maintaining its reputation for luxury and high-quality service, particularly on its ultra-long-range flights.
